What to image tonight with a Seestar S30 Pro?
The Seestar S30 Pro goes the opposite way from the S50. Where the S50 tightens the frame, the S30 Pro opens it up: around 4.6° diagonally, a diagonal field a little over three times wider than the S50's. Its four-element apochromatic optics and IMX585 sensor keep stars clean out to the edges, which matters all the more when the field is that wide.
This is an instrument for context. It does not try to isolate an object, it places it in its surroundings.
What you should know
160 mm focal length, 30 mm aperture, f/5.3. Built-in dual-band filter, mosaic mode available.
The S30 Pro also carries a second wide-angle camera, which opens up uses no previous Seestar offered: Milky Way panoramas, nightscapes, star trails with a sharp foreground.
Targets it suits particularly well
Large nebulae are its natural ground. NGC 7000, the Rosette and IC 1396 fit in frame without stitching. The full Veil complex may require a mosaic if you want to show it as a whole. M31 fits whole, with M32 and M110 — impossible on an S50 without a mosaic. The Pleiades and their blue dust veils also benefit from the extra room.
The rich Milky Way regions of summer, around Cygnus and Sagittarius, are another area where the wide field makes all the difference.
Worth keeping in mind
A wide field has a mechanical trade-off: every object occupies fewer pixels. A small galaxy or planetary nebula will look modest no matter how long you integrate. For those targets, a longer focal length remains preferable.
The 30 mm aperture also limits how much light is collected. On objects that are both faint and small, you will need more time than with a larger instrument for a comparable result.
NightAstro and the S30 Pro
NightAstro compares each target's apparent size with your actual field to adapt framing and flag when a mosaic is useful. It also adapts its difficulty, capture-time and filter advice without changing the EOS sky score.
It then combines that with the weather, the Moon, the object's altitude and your real horizon, walls and trees included.
